Marathon runners sign up for the race for various reasons ranging from tackling a personal goal to improving their fitness level to having bragging rights. Whatever reason they signed up, runners in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon can gain extra bragging rights by helping out a charity at the same time.
Registered runners can join the Stomp Out Stigma- Run for Mental Health Team to benefit the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance of Greater Chicago. Participants in the team are expected to raise at least $450. Those who join will get a race shirt, sun visor, free training for the marathon with ActiveTrainer.com, fundraising advice and incentives for success, two free tickets for the team pasta dinner the night before the race and other give-aways in a custom backpack.
Any non-marathon runners who want to help can volunteer. The DBSA-GC is looking for about 25 volunteers to help with team fundraising, sponsorship solicitation, runner recruitment, volunteer coordination, promotions and media. Volunteers will also be needed on event day to answer questions, give runners water and energy bars and other various activities.
The DBSA-GC is an organization supporting those with mood disorders and their families. It offers educational and support group programs with information about the causes, symptoms, treatments and personal and social costs of the disorders.
