Marathon Community Theatre goes high-tech with video links and Sound of Music

Like many community theatres across the country, Marathon Community Theatre (MCT) struggles to maintain interest, not just from audiences, but from actors, members and donors. This season, the Middle Keys playhouse took a 21st century path to build awareness of the organization’s 69th theatre season with an online video posted on the group’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/MarathonCommunityTheatre.

“The video concept came about as a way to engage our membership and build awareness about MCT in a fun, quirky way,” said General Manager Bonnie Greenberg. “It’s very Keys-ie.”Amusing lyrics, tailored to the Middle Keys lifestyle, are sung to the tune of “My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music,” which is set to open on the MCT stage in March.

The short film was produced locally by Conch Records and took place in various locations around the islands of Marathon including Sombrero Beach and Dolphin Research Center. “Only in the Florida Keys can community theatre members do jazz hands with a dolphin,” Greenberg said.

Marathon Community Theatre’s current season is filled with comedy and the sound of music. Tickets are available by calling the MCT box office at 305-743-0994. The remaining season line-up includes:
