Norwegians may be dominating the metal count at the Sochi Winter Games thus far, but it was a Dane who was memorialized at the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12-Hour race when the Maranello Motorsports team of Craig Lowndes, Peter Edwards, John Mowe and Miko Salo dedicated their win to the late Allan Simonsen who died at LeMans last year.

The quartet, took the race when Lowndes, behind the wheel of their Ferrari 458 GTS, managed to hold off HTP Motorsports driver Maximilian Buhk’s Mercedes Benz by a more .04 seconds as the two dueled for the lead at turn 2 with less than 5 minutes remaining on the clock.

The victory earned Lowndes his third 12-hour trophy (added to his 5 Bathurst 1000 wins), and the first for his teammates.

Noted as the closest finish in Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour history, the winning car managed to complete 296 laps despite 9 safety car interventions (the last just 20 minutes before the end of the race) for a total of 39 laps. In the end only 28 out of 42 managed to finish.

In the end, Bathurst legend Lowndes added a 12-hour trophy to his five Bathurst 1000 wins today whilst team-mates Mika Salo, and Peter Edwards won their first.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, kudos need to be given to the second place trio of Buhk, Thomas Jaeger (who won in 2013) and Harold Primat, who started 11th, then zoomed to the lead before dropping 2 laps off the lead when they were forced to pit for repairs involving a brake problem, and finally coming back in a merciless fight against the Ferrari.
