From Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg comes the gripping historical drama film Lincoln. Based partly on Doris Kearns Goodwin's biography of Lincoln, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, it stars Daniel Day-Lewis as United States President Abraham Lincoln and Sally Field as his wife Mary Todd Lincoln. The film boasts a stellar supporting cast that includes David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook, Tommy Lee Jones, John Hawkes, Jackie Earle Haley and Bruce McGill. Lincoln earned twelve Oscar nominations and won Best Actor for Day-Lewis’ phenomenal performance and Best Production Design. Additionally, Day-Lewis won a Golden Globe Award and a SAG Award for Best Actor and Tommy Lee Jones received a SAG Award for Best Supporting Actor.
With the Civil War raging and the carnage rising on the battlefield, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, pushes for the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution to abolish slavery. Fearing that the end of the war may discard his 1863 Emancipation Proclamation, he fights with his cabinet to ensure the end of slavery before he engages in peace negotiations with the Confederate government. However, some question his timing despite his insistence that the two issues are not separate. As his son Robert readies to enlist, it becomes even more essential to push for the vote on the amendment and end the war before putting his wife Mary, who was already mourning the loss of one son, through the possibility of losing yet another.
