Walt Disney promised his daughters he would make their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins, into a movie. In his quest to fulfill their wishes, it would take him 20 years to finally obtain the rights from Travers, who turns out to be a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer fearful of Hollywood mauling her beloved magical nanny.

When Travers’ books stop selling and finances grow tight, she reluctantly agrees to visit Los Angeles and listen to Disney’s proposal for the film adaptation of Mary Poppins. During two short weeks in 1961, Disney pulls all stops to convince Travers -- from imaginative storyboards to delightful songs by the Sherman brothers. Despite his all-out onslaught, Travers does not bulge and becomes more convinced not to release the rights to Mary Poppins. Just as it seems Disney has failed, he reaches into his own childhood to see the same ghosts that have haunted Travers. Finally understanding what Mary Poppins means to Travers, Disney and Travers make cinematic history and set Mary Poppins free.

The DVD includes one extra: "Nanny Song" deleted scene, where the Sherman Brothers perform a song for Pamela that she is less than thrilled with. Exclusive to Blu-ray are two more deleted scenes. In "Stargaze," a picture on Walt’s desk leads to a flashback of Pamela’s childhood. And in "Pam Leaves," after yet another disagreement with Walt, Pamela leaves his office and heads for the airport. There are also two featurettes included as well. In "The Walt Disney Studios: From Poppins to Present," join Director John Lee Hancock on a tour of the Disney Studios lot to reflect on studio life during the making of Mary Poppins, and discover how Walt’s creative spirit still flourishes today. In "Let's Go Fly a Kite," the cast and crew sing an impromptu version of the iconic song on set during the last day of shooting in a rousing, heartfelt tribute to Composer Richard Sherman.
