Releasing from the Disney Vault and coming to Blu-ray to for the first time is Mulan and Mulan II in a Special 2-Movie Collection to celebrate Mulan’s 15th anniversary. Mulan (1998) is the 36th animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series and is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan. Directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, it features the voices of Ming-Na Wen, Eddie Murphy, Miguel Ferrer and BD Wong. Following the success of Mulan, which earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, in 2005 Disney released the straight-to-video sequel Mulan II directed by Darrell Rooney and Lynne Southerland. The entire cast from the first film returned except for Eddie Murphy, Miriam Margolyes, Chris Sanders and Matthew Wilder; Mark Moseley and April Winchell joined the cast.
Set in China during the Han Dynasty, Mulan tells the tale of Fa Mulan, the daughter of the aged warrior Fa Zhou who was declared unfit for marriage. When her father is summoned by the Chinese emperor to join the army to fight a Hun invasion led by the ruthless Shan Yu, she disguises herself as a young man named Ping to take her father’s place. Protected by a small guardian dragon named Mushu, she fights bravely alongside her captain, Li Shang, a lucky cricket "Cri-kee" and her companions, Yao, Ling and Chien-Po, to save both the Emperor and China.
In the sequel Mulan II, General Shang visits Mulan and asks for her hand in marriage. Then the two are sent on a special mission by the Emperor to escort his three daughters, Princesses Mei, Ting-Ting and Su, across China to be betrothed to three princes in the kingdom Qui Gong to save China from being destroyed by the Mongols. Meanwhile a jealous Mushu tries to tear the couple apart. His antics and the princesses’ unhappiness about their arranged marriages lead to near disaster until Mulan finds a way to save the day and Mushu has a change of heart.
The DVD and Blu-ray special features include deleted scenes, backstage Disney featurettes, audio commentary and music videos.
