Current league leader Cruz Azul destroyed Atlante FC 4-1 at the Andres Quintana Roo Stadium in Cancun, Mexico to wrap up week 6 action of the Clausura 2014 of La Liga MX. The maquina cementera continues rising as they keep hold of the leader position on the league table.

Marco Fabian de la Mora scored a brace during the game as he begins to find himself scoring goals once more. Joao Rojas and Mauro Formica were also able to break the net for Cruz Azul. Angel Sepulveda put the “honor” goal on the board for the home side. The game shows that no matter how well you play, if you don’t score you don’t win.

The first 45 minutes of the game were action-packed with both teams leaving it on the pitch. The maquina struck first, literally, as in the first minute of action. On their first approach the Azulinos drove the ball to the line. Argentine Mauro Formica passed to the center where Fabian ran in and kicked the ball. It hit goalkeeper Eder Patiño but the ball still moved into the net for the 1-0.

The Potros de Hierro did not back down after the goal and within minutes were knocking on Jose de Jesus Corona’s net. Atlante began to retake the pitch making runs and possession of the ball. In the 34th Sepulveda put the ball in the net to close the gap. An attempted clearance by Julio Dominguez landed in front of Sepulveda who hammered the ball past the keeper. Corona was covering the opposite post and could do nothing to prevent the ball from entering his net.

Atlante maintained higher possession in the remainder of the half as they kept their hope alive to avoid falling deeper into possible relegation. The game went to the break with the 1-1.

Like in the first half Cruz Azul surprised in the opening minutes. A combination started with Cristian “Chaco” Gimenez gave la maquina the lead once more. A pass to Argentine Mariano Pavone who deflected to Rojas. The Ecuadorian simply pushed the ball into the net for the 2-1 in the 46th minute.

The home-side applied pressure to the visitors after the goal. Like in the first half they retook possession of the ball as they tried to breakthrough and close the gap once more. The intensity increased with both teams making runs keeping the fans cheering.

No matter how much possession Atlante kept, they fell victim once more to the cementeros’ attack. On a throw-in in the 64th minute, Fabian received the ball and shot at point-blank but hit the crossbar. The action forced Patiño to dive. Formica ran in and headed the rebound into the net before Patiño could recover lifting Cruz Azul to a 3-1 lead.

When Atlante played better, Gimenez made a work of art of a play. He passed to Pavone who took it to the line and scooped it to Fabian who jumped between two defenders to head the ball in for the 4-1. The Cancun fans showed their discomfort with the squad and began chanting “Ole!” after every pass from Cruz Azul players. Cruz Azul went on to win thefame 4-1.

Cruz Azul will host Puebla FC in Mexico City in their next match. Atlante will travel to the Hidalgo Stadium to take on CF Pachuca.
