Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke's son killed in car accident

Brendan Burke, son of Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke, was killed in a car crash. The fatal accident happened on U.S. 35 in Indiana.The road conditions were treacherous at the time of the crash. The area had just received heavy snowfall.

21 year old Brendan Burke was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee at the time of the crash. Brendan 's friend, Mark A. Reedy was also killed in the accident. Reedy was 18 years old.

Early reports indicate that Bendan's vehicle slid sideways into an oncoming truck. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured in the crash.

Toronto Maple Leafs released a brief statement regarding Brendan Burke's tragic passing:
The Toronto Maple Leafs are saddened to report that Brendan Burke, the youngest son of Leafs President and General Manager Brian Burke, succumbed to injuries he suffered in an auto accident earlier today in Indiana.

The family asks for privacy at this difficult time.


Brian Burke is also the general manager of the US Olympic team.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Burke family and friends.

Toronto Maple Leaf fans are leaving condolence messages on the teams Twitter page.

Brendan Burke made national news in 2007 when he came out and said he was gay. His father, Brian, proudly supported his son.
