Maple Leafs end eight game losing streak in win over Flames

According to the Canadian Press, the Toronto Maple Leafs ended their eight game losing streak on Tuesday evening when they defeated the Calgary Flames 3-2 at the Air Canada Centre.

David Clarkson scored the game winning goal for Toronto at 5:47 of the third period from Calgary native Mason Raymond.

Flames rookie center Bryce Van Brabant of Morinville, Alberta played in his very first National Hockey League game. He got on the stat sheet when he took a two minute high sticking penalty in the first period.

Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf had 24 penalty minutes that resulted in a cross checking infraction with seven seconds left in the third period. As Randy Sportak of the Calgary Sun fondly wrote "Phaneuf would have been a dream for anybody having him as their penalty-minutes man in a hockey pool".

With the victory, the Maple Leafs improve to 37-32-8 and are one point back of the Columbus Blue Jackets for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Calgary, which drops to 31-38-7, will next play in Tampa Bay on Thursday.
