Map of sea level projections: Cities to avoid from effects of global warming

According to New Scientist on Feb 7, Mahe Perrette of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, put together a map of projected rising sea levels for the year 2100.

Some cities that will experience the greatest amount of sea level rise by 2100 would be Sydney, Tokyo, and Buenos Aires. Also, other factors can have an impact on the sea level distribution. This would include a sinking and rising of land masses that could cause the gravitational pull to have an influence on the behavior of the oceans. As a result, this would cause disappearing ice sheets to recede away from their current location.

New York was thought to be another city that would be subject to infringing sea levels; however, Perrette’s predictions show a weakening of the Gulf Stream which will cause the water to slop west, causing the eastern seaboard to be witness to sea level rise. On the other hand, due to the gravitational pull of the Greenland, this will counteract this situation.

Though some global predictions indicate there will be a rise of 30 and 106 centimeters by 2100, Perrette modeled that tropical seas will rise 10 or 20 percent more. Also, Antarctica could lose a lot of ice as well which could bring about an above average rise in the northern hemisphere.

Perrette gives fair warning to tropical paradises. “You may have 120 centimeters of sea level rise on your coastline, he says. “Build defenses.”

The map also has a feature about the rate of the impact emissions will have on global warming which will also have an impact on rising sea levels.
