Manzano High School's varsity basketball team lost a close game Wednesday to Clovis High School 60-57. The Monarchs had low scoring quarters in the first (seven points) quarter and second quarter (seven points). Manzano scored only five points in overtime. The Clovis Wildcats now have a 22-6 record. Manzano is 12-15 overall.
Jarrell Harper leads the Monarchs in scoring with a 15.4 points per game average. TJ Holyfield is second in scoring with a 9.3 points per game average. He's followed by Warren Smith Jr. who has an 8.9 points per game average. Holyfield has been successful on 31 of 40 free throw attempts. Eric Aguirre leads the team with 57 assists, followed by Cristian Lucero with 45 and Holyfield's 39 assists.
Holyfield leads the Monarchs with a 6.6 rebound per game average. Smith averages 4.4 rebounds per game. While Manzano is fourth in the 5A District 2 Basketball Standings with a record of 0-6, Eldorado High School is first in the standings with a district record of 5-1. The Eagles overall record is 20-8 after a 69-66 loss Thursday to Clovis High School. The Eagles are averaging 74.9 points, 17 assists and 32.8 rebounds per game.
Coach Roy Sanchez' leading scorer is senior Cullen Neal who averages 26.3 points per game. Zach Lee is second with an 11.6 PPG average. Toben Brazier Sr. is third with an 11.2 PPG average. Cullen Neal's free throw percentage is 85 percent. Brazier and Dalton Neal both have a 71 percent free throw percentage.
Cullen Neal leads the Eagles with 7.3 assists per game. Kane Martinez Sr. is second with 3-8. Lee is the leader is rebounds with 8.1 per game and Zach Gentry is second with 7.6.
