Many Tibetan journalists jailed in China

News that many Tibetan journalists are jailed in China has simply added to the despair of Buddhists in Syracuse who have been praying daily for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Tibet. The locking up of Tibetan journalists by the Chinese government implies there is no end in sight to the brutal crackdown on the truth about what is happening there. The Tibet Post International has reported "Ten of Twenty Seven Journalists Jailed in China Are Tibetans."

A global annual census on imprisoned journalists which has been conducted by a leading international NGO promoting press freedom has revealed that 10 out of 27 known journalists imprisoned in China are Tibetans, and six are Uyghurs. In its December 2011 Prison Census on China the Committee to Protect Journalists said that Tibetans and Uyghurs form the bulk of journalists jailed in China, and that this unfortunate trend dates back to the widespread 2008 and 2009 protests in Tibet and East Turkestan respectively.

The Tibet Post International reports that the imprisoned Tibetan journalists include documentary filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen; Kunchok Tsephel Gopey Tsang, online writer for Tibetan cultural issues website, Chomei; Kunga Tsayang aka Gangyi, political essayist, photographer and environmental activist; Tashi Rabten, writer /publisher of SharDungri magazine; Dokru Tsultrim, the twice-detained monk writer for Khawai Tsesok journal; Jolep Dawa, writer and editor of Durab Kyi Nga magazine; Choepa Lugyal aka Meycheh, freelance writer for Shar Dungri magazine."

And the writer and editor Jangtse Donkho aka Nyen and his fellow writer for Shar Dungri magazine, Buddha, along with another writer for Shar Dungri, Kalsang Jinpa aka Garmi who was arrested along with Nyen and Buddha are all being held in prison in China. The number that this survey reveals may not be the complete picture in view of extreme restrictions and censorship laws placed on any information related to Tibet as ''state secrets''.
