Many starting their own business to beat recession

Many are taking layoffs and a poor economy as a chance to launch their own business

According to a CNN online article, many people suffering from the down economy are taking the initiative and starting their own businesses. For some it's because of a large severence package that gives them the startup cash they've needed. For others it's a desire to be independent and never have to rely on someone else for a job. Whatever the reason, many new businesses are starting up even while many others are closing their doors.

Boise has long been an incubator of new startups. Many companies in the Treasure Valley were started as a result of layoffs by one of the bigger technology companies. Many workers run side-businesses on top of their regular jobs either to supplement their income or in hopes of one day quitting their day job and going full time. Others may experiment with self-employment while looking for other work.

I am starting a series of articles featuring new startups, whether they be lay-off induced, side jobs, or because the time is right to try something new. I'm interested in exploring the reasons behind why each business started, and what strategies each business uses to find success. If you are interested in being a part of this series, please contact me. I will select a few new ventures to cover and track them over time.
