For the second year in a row, Manny Pacquiao is named ESPN’s Fighter of the Year, ESPN announced Monday. This isn’t a big surprise to Pac fans, he has won the award three out of the last four years, with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. winning it in 2007.
In 2008, Pacquiao won titles at junior lightweight, lightweight, and welterweight and has been touted at the fighter who put Oscar De La Hoya into retirement.
In 2009, Pacquiao won both of his fights by knockout. He beat Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto with decisive victories. For more on that fight, click here.
Pac added two more weight classes and now has a record in seven divisions including flyweight, junior featherweight, featherweight, junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight and welterweight.
Pac’s promoter, Bob Arum has called Pac "the greatest fighter I've ever seen" and he has 40 plus years in the business. He has compared Pac’s star power, and fighting prowess to Muhammad Ali's, according to ESPN. And Bob Arum promoted Muhammad Ali.
Currently, Pac’s promoter is attempting to organize a fight between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Manny Pacquiao in March of 2010. The two camps have debated blood testing over the past week in hopes of coming up with a resolution. Promoters are hoping to be able to announce the fight by January 11, 2010. All of a sudden everybody is a steroid or blood test expert.
Floyd hasn't been test in 21 months so he is clean, but if you think about it, Floyd came up in weight too. All they way up to 154 from 106, but because he is AMERICAN, nobody questioned it. Look at the 20 boxers that have been caught after the fight that used drugs, none were Filipino. Majority were AMERICAN and MEXICAN.
