Manny and Miguel, just say no

No on bogus sanctioning bodies
Pacland Public Enemy #1 reporting from an undisclosed location while smoking a beef brisket, along with enjoying a few Shiner Bocks.

Seems as if some card carrying members of Pacquiao Nation have taken offense to my recent columns regarding their star, again.  My life has been threatened, my intelligence insulted, and my so-called expertise in all things boxing questioned because I dared to argue that no championships are needed to make Pacquiao's bout with Miguel Cotto a battle for the ages and that Puerto Ricans are not enamoured with Cotto as much as Filipinos are with Pacquiao.  Of course mentioning that Erik Morales' first fight with Manny Pacquiao is one of my all-time favorite scraps had many of Manny's Maniacs going wild and thirsty for violence.

Now a week following the official announcement of Cotto - Pacquiao, the loudest buzz surrounding the fight is that pesky WBO welterweight championship which is NOT at stake.  Yes fight fans, the title is NOT at stake for now and it really should not matter to any of us.

First of all, in the current boxing scene sanctioned world championships are a joke.  The organizations which control these trinkets twist and turn the rankings at the drop of an unmarked envelope with an undisclosed sum of money bursting at its seams.  At their illogical discretion they make a championship, a super champion, an interim champion, a North American champion, and a Ricardo Lois' Backyard championship.

We should worry about the best fighters fighting the best available competition on a consistent basis, which is something both Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto have done all of their careers.  The reason why Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto is a joy for boxing fans, is based that these two warriors will leave every ounce of their soul in between the ropes before taking a defeat.  On November 15 boxing fans are in store for one of the best fights in the history of boxing, not just recent years.

So Miguel Cotto does not want to pay a $150,000 UDS sanctioning fee to defend a title.  Can you blame him?  Would you like to pay a single penny to step inside of a ring and put your life at stake?  As far as I am concerned, the WBO and all other boxing organizations should be paying Cotto, Pacquiao, and other for being their champions.  Why should they line the bank accounts of their "non-profit" boxing organisms on the blood of men?

And just to be clear, if Miguel Cotto is to put a welterweight title on the line, the weight limit should be the full 147 pounds.

Now the popular sentiment among some segments is that Pacquiao should have the opportunity to fight for his seventh championship.  Now dear fans and pundits, when Manny Pacquiao is enshrined in the International Boxing Hall of Fame at the end of his career, will we remember him for championships or the thrilling moments he gave us against Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, and others?

Just say no to sanctioning fees and bogus organizations and ask for the best fights from our fighters.  Remember, even John Ruiz held a sanctioned world championship - twice.

    You have a point.
It just came to my realization recently that of all sports, Boxing is the only (if not few) of the sports that the players have to pay a big chunk of their professional pay and put their title at stake!
Maybe it is time to change all this old rules.

  • TT 2 years ago

I thought this has been made a title match as of today, and isn't Arum paying the sanctioning fees? The fact that the belt wasn't put on the line from the start makes me wonder if Cotto is confident going into this fight? Maybe he's a bit nervous after his last couple of fights. Who knows. Anyway, I just hope its a good fight and that Pacquiao wins - title or no title.

  • bErNie vEe 2 years ago

    Bad news bitch!

Hey pimp, sorry to disappoint you but the fight will be a title fight. Thanks to Marley-led worldwide indignation.

For a son of a bitch like you, it's bad news, but for us boxing fans, it's good news.

My favorite writer is Michael Marley. I'm not saying you're one lousy moronic nonsense boring writer. But it's just that I enjoy Marley's articles. Sorry!

  • The-Man 2 years ago

You can't say something bad about Pacquiao, or the Flipinos would eat you alive.

Typical Filipino comment - "you don't know nothing about Boxing, Mabuhay Pilipinas"

  • The-Man 2 years ago

God damn Filipinos man, they get on my nerves.

They are NOT boxing fans, they are PACQUIAO FANS and that's it.

Filipinos just need to get off pacquiao's dick, seriously.

    lol

  • Your Name Here 2 years ago

Well it will definetely be a title fight. I do agree with you about the sanctioning fee and it's politics and BS although the fight must push through with the WBO WW title on the line. Everyone knows it's about the $feria$ but the Pac-backers will demand the title. And why not? Afterall that would further cement MP's ATG status even higher. 7 belts..WOW! Never been done, I will apologize for some Filipinos since most of them are just MP fans and not actual boxing fans. Oh and TNT (the d*uche below me) needs to consider that not ALL Filipinos are on Pac's d*ck, I for one am a pacfan but will always be a bigger boxing fan. 1

Lois you're just feeding the fire with fuel by saying that Manny's fans is bashing you thereby making others thinked that Filipinos are maniacs or something.. The truth is that you simply cannot handle the criticism that is being directed towards you with your biased articles. Whether you're really a hater or not what made you think that these accusations and postings against you are true or just plain joke? If you can't handle criticism or a joke you might as well stop being a writer and a crybaby.

Lois, come out of your bunker. No one is out to get you. The black hawk helicopters are all in your head. I'm a Pacfan but deeply enjoy your articles (They are full of facts that can't be disputed and literary wit that makes me laugh even as I get upset). I reluctantly agree with you sometimes even though you will never truly understand the Pacquiao phenomenon. He is the Ali, Gandi, and Kennedy of our time for everything that he does inside and outside of the ring, a torch bearer for the little guy. I hope you get a chance to live in the moment and give Pacquaio his due during this wondrous time while he is still actively fighting and charming the world.

That is how many PAC Fans are. Praise Pacquiao you are a great writer. Point out some weakness you are a nonsense writer. Embarrassing but true. Sorry, but dont take them seriously. Most of them are kids or kids in mind. Pasensya. Pero totoo

ARUM doesnt want cotto to defend his title. business-wise if cotto loses, he's not champion anymore, Arum will lose his only milking cow remaining. Pacman will retire next year, leaving Arum with no superstar to promote unless Cotto is still champion. its all about the money BOB

  • BK 2 years ago

RICARDO LOIS: And just to be clear, if Miguel Cotto is to put a welterweight title on the line, the weight limit should be the full 147 pounds.

BK: Hey Mr. Writer did you not see Oscar DeLa Hoya and B-Hop fight for Hopkin's Middleweight Title BELT?

AND YOU KNOW AT WHAT WEIGHT?

AT A CATCHWEIGHT OF 158 LBS!!!!

2 LBS LESS THAN THE MIDDLEWEIGHT LIMIT OF 160 LBS!

    WHAT'S YOUR PROBLEM?

YOU HAVE A DOUBLE STANDARD AGAINST FILIPINOS????

  • BK 2 years ago

IF PACMAN FIGHTS COTTO AT A 145 LBS. 2 LBS LESS THAN THE LIMIT, ISN;T IT NOT STILL AT WELTERWEIGHT? 140.1 - 147 LBS IS A WELTERWEIGHT

AND IF ODLH FOUGHT HOPKINS AT A CATCHWEIGHT OF 158 LBS FOR HIS BELT, WHY CAN'T PACMAN DO THE SAME?

WRITERS SHOULDN'T BE BIAS OR DOUBLE STANDARD. HOW DID YOU GET HIRED HERE?

it should be a title fight.. for how long will cotto keep on hiding his wbo belt.. to whom he want to put his wbo belt on the line.. the last time he fought clottey he weighs 146 pounds.. 145 pounds is not difficult for him..

  • joebentvice 2 years ago

Lois, I say you are learning how to handle the Pacfans with humor :) Good to see that man.

You have a valid point on criticizing the boxing sanctioning bodies but i don't think that's the main reason you said this SHOULD NOT be a title fight. Your main reason is that Cotto should be given full advantage of the 147 limit. I agree that there's a merit to this argument but not much so.

Championships were fought before in catchweights, e.g. dela hoya vs hopkins.

The 147 limit is to put a ceiling on the welterweight division. it's a limit to what maximum much you can weigh not a limit to how much you can weigh less.

Cotto will not be drained at 145. He weighed in on the Clottey fight at 146. all he needs to do is drink half a liter less of water and he makes 145.

For those who criticize the catchweight agreement, 147 limit is no problem for me if you want to give Cotto the privilege, but let's say, why not weigh in 147 the day of the fight like what they did back then in the

People who think Filipinos are just MP Fans and don't know boxing are stupid. Seriously! We have so many Filipino boxers and we know them, from Penalosa, Espinosa, Tunacao, Elorde, Navarrette, Z Gorres, Conception and the list goes on and on. Last time i checked, their names are still the same and NOT PACQUIAO. I can enumerate all the champions since of boxing not just Filipinos since 1998 when I became a boxing fan. And those so called experts like Lois aren't experts - they are just fans. Hey Lois do you train anyone? They make wrong predictions ALL THE TIME. They're demagogues - talk and talk but know nothing. Everytime i hear that comment about filipinos not know boxing, i feel insulted. Sorry, but can you guys can be a lot smarter. Anyway, it's Pacquiao by 5th round KO.

Mr. Ricardo, whether cotto stakes his belt or not, he will still pay the sanction fee to WBO according to Valcarcel...
welterweight is between 140.1 - 147 and that is a fact... the weight issue has been addressed and don't keep on coming on the weight issue because cotto has drop that first on the table and they both have agreed on that recently.

Who said Filipinos are just PacMan fans and not boxing fans?

Im a Tyson and Morales fan even before Pacquiao because people here love boxing. And mind you that i was just grade school on Tyson's era.

I got to know the great Gabriel "Flash" Elorde cause people sometimes talk about him, contrary to what this writer thinks that Philippine boxing dont know their history.

He's the one saying that PR are the most intelegent people and filipino are blind. Whose bias?

  • Perry 2 years ago

The fight don't have to be at 147 lbs. to make it a Welterweight championship fight. It can be a welterweight championship fight if it is above 140 lbs. if both fighters agree to it. Remember the De La Hoya and Hopkins fight in Sept. 2004? It was a middleweight championship fight at a catch weight of 158 lbs. 2 lbs shy from 160 lbs.

Lois is a sourgrape and so is Kevin Lole. How many times did they predict Pacquiao's fall then write an apology the day after each of pacquiao's fights? I'm sure they'll be the first ones to say that COTTO lost because he was weight drained. Again, the strategy of haters to BELITTLE Pacquiao's accomplishments. Kevin Lole is the same. Renowned boxing expert Al Bernstein said if pacquiao beats mayweather he could end up being the top 10 of all time, while Kevin Lole from Yahoo said only top 100. After beating Mayweather, TOP 100?!?! For WHAT?! A sourgrape who just plainly hates pacquiao. These poeple should be fired. I could be a better and fairer sports journalist that them.

Hey Lois, had you researched something about the undisputed middleweight title fight between B-Hops and dela Hoya? FYI, it was fought at a catchweight 2lbs south of 160lbs, yet it was a title figh at middleweight. That means their is already a precedent for this kind of title fight. If it can be done at middleweight why not at welterweight? Are you belong to dela Hoya's payroll to protect his record as six time world champ in six different division? And yes, if you're questioning the credibility of the sanctioning bodies them make a move to abolish them and create a new sanctioning body to call it yourself a world championship giving body if you can. Because whether you like it or not the present sanctioning bodies are still considered as they are.

  • Concerned fan 2 years ago

I totally agree with you mave. SPOT ON! We even get to watch PPV fights free on Channel 9. I watched all delahoya fights even against quartey and Moseley, all Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis fights, etc.. We know boxing. Period. We just have to defend ourselves because these haters don't have anything to say about Filipinos. Anyway, it's Pacquiao by 5th round KO. Sorry haters, Cotto made the wrong decision of taking this fight. Only 1 person can beat Pac and it's Marquez.

  • Dondricko 2 years ago

Dude, 145 pounds should still be a title fight since it belong to the welterweight limit of 140.1 - 147 pounds. If cotto weighs around 146 or 147 during weigh-in, he should pay pacquiao every excess pound but still go on for the title title. but if he weighs more than 147, he should be strip off the title. 145 is just a contracted weight.
