Manna Food Center, located in Montgomery County, is this week’s non-profit in the spotlight. Their motto “fighting hunger and feeding hope in Montgomery County” is the philosophy the organization has lived by since opening its doors in 1983. Since that date, Manna Food Center has fed over 2.5 million men, women and children in Montgomery County. Their mission is to eradicate hunger and provide nutritional education.
With 1 out of every 4 individuals going hungry every day, the County has 29.3 percent of the students on the free lunch program within the school system. To help with this widespread issue, Manna Food Center feeds over 3300 families per month.
Who is eligible to receive help from Manna Food Center?
Montgomery County residents who earn less than the 2008 Montgomery County Self-Sufficiency Standard. Clients must earn less than $70,000 for a family of four or $33,000 for a single person.
In order to continue to provide assistance to struggling families, The Manna Food Center needs your help. The center is in danger of losing precious funding. The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services is holding a community forum on October 19, regarding the FY2013 operating budget. With so many children in danger of going hungry, Montgomery County residents should plan to attend the forum to support the organization.
The meeting will be held at the Children’s Resource Center in Rockville, MD from 6-8 pm. To sign up to speak, call (240) 777-1211.
