Mankato West High School improved to 8-1 on the season Saturday afternoon, with a 33-22 playoff win against Chanhassen High.
After a back and forth first half, the Scarlets grabbed a 20-14 lead with 27 seconds left in the half on a seven yard touchdown pass to Will Claussen, his second TD of the night. west never gave up the lead after, scoring on a blocked kick in the opening minutes of the third and a long 17-yard run by Cory Johnson in the fourth. Quarterback Ryan Schlichte continued his reign as on of the state’s most efficient due-threats. He only passed for 130 and a touchdown, but scored twice on the ground and ran for a team-high 111 yards.
The game also put an end to Chanhassen’s season. The Storm had pulled off 6 straight victories to make it into the playoffs.
West’s lone loss on the season was against conference juggernaut Owatonna, who remains undefeated. Owatonna shut out the Scarlets in the playoffs last year, a lost the team would like to avenge this year.
West is ranked 24th in the state, a number that will only get better as the team advances in the playoffs.
