Have your New Year's Resolution? Whats on your list? The usual? Lose weight? spend more time with family? Oh please! Just go out and SALSA!
Salsa guru PsyniiGianni Yossarian Scott's Facebook post pretty much sums it up for all dedicated DMV Salsa fans:
"Come on DMV let's represent! It's time to put up or shut up. I'm calling everyone out from Mr.Mambo, Galaxy, Bravo Bravo, Havana Village, TSR, Mango Mikes, Clarendon Grill, Barking Dog, Coco Cabana, Lima, Cafe Citron, Talara, Red Maple, Latin Palace, Ecitie, Pure, Almaz, everybody! You've been challenged to dance the night away at the Resolution on January 7 @ Lucky Strike, Washington DC."
Why are we glued to watching shows like he Biggest Looser or Dancing with the Starts when we have such great local talent in our own back yard?
PsyniiGianni Yossarian Scott, a professional DC salsero, started dancing as a child, around 10 years old, as he observed his cousins dancing Salsa, Merengue and Bachata. Scott, together with the many dancers following him on Facebook, has helped shape the Salsa community in the DMV. He recalls that the decade between 1997 and 2006 had a major up swing in Latin music and the venues where it could be heard, played and danced to.
As the recession creeped in, many regular Salsa and Latin Music clubs in the area closed their doors, and many devoted dancers and performers lost their venues.
Let's salute Psy Scott (among many active dance teachers and performers in the area) who called on old and new to recapture what we (the dance DVM community) once had. To every person that has ever danced, listened and visited any of social dance establishments in the past and even now, to come out one more time and make it a night of soulful expression in one cataclysmic night!
So, stand up to the challenge even if you are the beginner, or new in town, or consider yourself a dance pro. Let's acknowledge Earl Rush, Kelvin Harris, Keith Givens, Tommy Smith, Elieen Torres, Michelle Reyes, Primo Productions, C.O.C. Productions, Cecilia Villalobos, Lee Smith and Kat la Gata, etc. who kept going despite huge challenges.
Places like Lucky Strike, Clarendon Grill, Barking Dog, Lima, Mr. Mambo's, Bravo Bravo, TSR, Havana Village and Lucky Bar are social are some of the area's greatest Salsa hot spots. They're still hot and have regular salsa classes- let's keep that trend going!
January the 7th is the biggest party of the (New) year - The Resolution Jam. There will be Salsa, Bachata, with hints of Merengue, Reggaeton.
Get your dancing shoes on give it a spin at the Resolution Jam! See you on the dance floor at Lucky Strike (701 7th St , NW) .
