PEEKSKILL, NY -- If you're looking for a beer-centric pub in Westchester County, go no further than the Birdsall House.
The recently-opened Main Street establishment is owned by Tim Reinke and Johnny Sharp, also the owners of The Blind Tiger Ale House in Manhattan.
Their new venture is a glossy coversion of what Sharp explains on his blog was "a very old and beautiful ship" but "this ship had seen better days."
Actually, it had for generations been Connolly's, a popular watering hole and truly a Peekskill icon.
Reinke and Sharp lavished a lot of attention on the new version, including installing a 20-tap draft beer system that has a heavy representation of New York and Northeastern brews. Among the labels are Sixpoint Autobahn IPA, Captain Lawrence Smoked Porter, Southampton Bier de Mars, Ommegang Witte and Doc's Draft Pear Cider.
However, they also spent a fair amount of time on the food segment, hiring Matt Hutchins, a recent graduate of the nearby Culinary Institute of America but who has 15 years' experience in the field. mong his stops was the famed Chez Panisse, and he hs put together a repertoire that includes dishes ranging from southern to California French to Caribbean. Following an ever-growing trend, he promises to use as much locally produced food as possible.
