AVENTURA, FL – From the world premiere of Mandy Patinkin’s newest concert Let Go, to doo wop, classical, comedy and satire with The Second City and Sarge, to award-winning and international films, there is something for everyone this February at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center.
America's famed comedy troupe is back with topical, insightful, satirical sketches when the City of Aventura presents The Second City in the Laugh Out Loud Tour on Thursday, February 2 at 8 p.m. From the company that launched the careers of Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Gilda Radner and Bill Murray comes the next generation of the comedy world's best and brightest presenting an evening of hilarious sketch comedy and Second City's trademark improvisation. Tickets are $39.
The Bronx Wanderers take the stage on Friday, February 3 at 8 p.m. With superlative vocals and musicianship, dynamic enthusiasm and a genuine love of the music they perform, The Bronx Wanderers recreate the music of the 50s and early 60s performing doo-wop and rock and roll in an evening of toe-tapping, hand clapping and dancing in the aisles. Tickets are $36.50.
The Facial Pain Research Foundation presents the film “Certifiably Jonathan” on Saturday, February 4 at 7 p.m. Legendary comic Jonathan Winters stars in this mockumentary about a gifted painter whose dreams of having his work hang in the Museum of Modern Art come true. The film follows him launching into a creative frenzy and setting out on a quest to get his creative confidence and sense of humor back when his favorite painting is stolen. Robin Williams, Sarah Silverman, Howie Mandel, Tim Conway, and Robert Klein and other “surprise guests” have cameos. The film’s director, Jim Pasternak, will host a question and answer session following the film. Tickets are $10.
Mazel Musicals, Inc. and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts present At Last: The Songs of Harry Warren on Wednesday, February 8 through Sunday, February 12. Winner of three Academy Awards and nominated for nine more, Warren had more songs in the Top Ten of Your Hit Parade between 1932 and 1957 than any other songwriter with standards such as "Jeepers Creepers," "Lullaby of Broadway," "I Only Have Eyes For You," "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "You’ll Never Know," "Forty Second Street" and "At Last." This is a presentation in the Melodies & Memories Series, spirited celebrations of America’s greatest songs from Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood, conceived and directed by Barry Levitt, former Artistic Director of New York's 92nd Street Y’s smash Lyrics and Lyricists Series. Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a loved one at a screening of Love, Etc. on Tuesday, February 14 at 7 p.m. The film documents the universal stages of love by following five couples, who range in age between 18 and 89, over the course of a year in New York City. Love, Etc. launches the Aventura Documentary Film Series presented by Miami Movie Company and is part of the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center’s Arts Access Program. This film is not rated and parental guidance is recommended for children under 13. Tickets are $10. Enjoy a tribute to music legends in Icons on Friday, February 17 at 8 p.m. when singer/pianist David McBride and award-winning British vocalist Jacqui Peters perform songs by Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Tony Bennett, Shirley Bassey, Barry Manilow and more. The show also features musical director Phil Hinton and his orchestra. The performance benefits the Anita Priest "Whispering Angels" Memorial Scholarship Foundation. Tickets are $30 and $40.
Low Brow Entertainment Company presents Sarge as the final show in the Aventura Comedy Series on Saturday, February 18 at 8:30 p.m. Sarge has performed worldwide and toured with some of the biggest names in show business. His show combines piano playing with stand-up comedy and singing that will have you laughing from beginning to end. Tickets are $31 and $36.
The Miami International Piano Festival continues with the American Pianist Stephen Beus on Sunday, February 19 at 5 p.m. He will perform timeless pieces by Bernard Stevens, Charles Griffes, Bach Busoni, Nikolai Medtner, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Vladimir Horowitz. Tickets are $30.
Tony and Emmy Award-winner Mandy Patinkin takes the stage in the world premiere of Let Go on Thursday, February 23 at 8 p.m.; Friday February 24 at 8 p.m.; Saturday, February 25 at 2 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Friday 26 at 2 p.m. In Patinkin's latest and most intimate concert, he creates musical photographs of ourselves, our families and our country through the words and music of the American songbook. Featured American composers include Harold Arlen, Irving Berlin, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, David Newman and Tom Waits. Open captioning will be available during Saturday’s matinee performance. Tickets are $75.
The Aventura Foreign Film Series continues with The Piano in a Factory on Tuesday, February 28 at 7 p.m. When his only chance to win custody of his daughter is to provide a home with a piano, a father persuades a bunch of misfits to help him forge the instrument in a derelict factory from a heap of scrap steel in this offbeat ballad of friendship and devotion that is presented in Mandarin with English subtitles. The film is hosted by Shelly Isaacs who introduces the film and leads a post-screening discussion. Tickets are $10.
