Mandela interpreter with violent past blames schizophrenia for fake performance

At Nelson Mandela's memorial, a momentous world event, there had already been quite enough bizarre news stories coming back in living color. The international community had seen Obama shaking Castro's hand, Obama taking selfies with two other world leaders, and Michelle Obama glaring at the beautiful blonde President of Denmark who was chatting with President Obama. As if the story needed a bit more "crazy," USA Today reports in a Dec. 12 article that the interpreter for the occasion, Thamsanqa Jantjie, was not actually performing sign language during the speeches by world leaders. He was actually just flailing his arms about and signing total gibberish! He blames his schizophrenia for the situation.

Jantjie claims he had an attack and began to hear various voices and see angels while he was standing on stage. Instead of just stepping down from the podium, he began to execute the strangest “Soulja Boy” type gestures, even appearing to fly at one point.

Taking the incident to a more serious level, however, is the fact that the interpreter had a past history of violent behavior and was mere feet away from President Obama and other world leaders. USA Today reports:

He also told the AP that he has previously been violent and was once hospitalized in a mental health facility for more than a year.

There are still more questions about the acquisition of this interpreter for the important memorial.
