Yet again, the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok has a very special treat for those lucky enough to dine at Le Normandie Restaurant during this very exclusive 6-day event being held August 26-31, 2013. Often referred to as the “Godfather of Modernist 3-Michelin Star Cuisine,” Chef Jean-Georges Klein is known for his diverse palette while creating beautiful creations, which are rich in textures and colors that alternate artistically between traditional and modern.
After his hotel management studies, he worked in the dining room for 20 years, where his grandmother and mother had created this unique restaurant experience in what was once a hostel for coal workers and lumberjacks. His mother had earned their first star in 1988, and Chef Jean-Georges Klein later succeeded his mother at the age of 40. A true sense of family, he was self-taught and encouraged by his sister to always push the envelope with his innovations, eventually earning him three stars among multiple other awards. His wife also joined the family tradition, collaborating with her husband to develop Hotel K, part of the Relais & Chateaux family of properties. Now with a great support system, his wife and daughter manage the hotel while his sister operates the front of the house at the restaurant, allowing him to continue expanding his creativity and following his passion in the kitchen.
Focused on the four elements of nature, Chef Jean-Georges Klein uses these elements of water, air, fire and earth while constantly thinking outside of the box to create esthetically beautiful masterpieces that also provide an out-of-this-world sensory experience. When talking to aspiring chefs, he tells them, “Use what the market has to offer and make good simple food. And put your heart into your cooking.” Living by this statement himself, he is excited to bring his culinary vision to the heart of Bangkok while being honored at Guest Chef at Le Normandie restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental. Located in the Garden Wing of the hotel, it is one of the most treasured French restaurants in all of Asia, and offers some of the most stunning views over the river in a warm and elegant atmosphere. Bon appétit!
