Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Fla., will be the site for the 2014 Guinness International Champions Cup (ICC) Final between bitter English rivals, Manchester United and Liverpool. According to an ESPNFC Aug. 4 report, opening kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (7 p.m. CT/6 p.m. MT/5 p.m. PT) on ESPN Deportes (TV schedule), and streaming live on ESPN Deportes Radio (en vivo) and WatchESPN Deportes (online) in Spanish.
Just days after setting a new attendance record for a soccer match in the United States, a new International Champions Cup champion will be crowned in South Fla. In front of 109,318 spectators in Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich., Manchester United dethroned defending ICC and European champions, Real Madrid, to the tune of 3-1.
“It was pretty extraordinary being there with that crowd,” said RSE Ventures CEO Matt Higgins in a recent interview. “You could feel it was one of the tipping points for the sport in this country. If there was any question whether soccer has arrived in the United States, that put an end to it. It sold out in 36 hours, and it wasn’t just the size of the crowd, but the level of enthusiasm.”
As reported by the Miami Herald on Aug. 4, soccer fever continues well after the conclusion of the 2014 World Cup, as a crowd of over 50,000 people is expected to fill the home of the Miami Dolphins for tonight’s finale. This is great news for the sport, in particular for English soccer fans that are trying to forget England’s disappointing showing in Brazil last month.
“Everybody is looking forward to it,” said Liverpool midfielder, Jordan Henderson, one of seven players in this year’s England World Cup squad. “It’s always important to win games, even in preseason, when you’re getting your fitness levels as high as you can.
“Everybody is trying to stay injury-free, but at the same time you want to be winning games. [Monday] is another big game for us, a big test, and of course we want to win.”
However, with a convincing win over Los Merengues, The Red Devils comes into tonight’s title game with momentum on their side. 2014 Guinness International Champions Cup oddsmakers have Manchester United as the outright betting favorites [+110] to defeat their longtime rivals Liverpool [+240].
In addition to the match’s betting lines, soccer (betting) specialists are also expecting a low scoring affair this evening, evidenced by the fact that the OVER/UNDER is set at a combined 2½ goals. Finally, the chances that Manchester United and Liverpool will be deadlocked after 90 minutes of play stand at +225, which is the value of a draw in this one.
Who will prevail in this battle of English Premier League giants? Soccer fans around the world simply cannot afford to miss this historic encounter.
