English club team Manchester United defeated Italian club team Internazionale with penalties on Tuesday for a Group A game in the Guinness International Champions Cup. The game had to be settled with penalties after a scoreless tie in regular time.
It was reported that Man U was trying to get its third consecutive game in the preseason under new Dutch coach Louis van Gaal. Man U defeated the LA Galaxy 7-0 earlier in July in a friendly match and took down AS Roma 3-2 in the first Group A game of the International Champions Cup.
The third game of preseason against Inter was not quite a victory, but it was an exciting scoreless tie as both teams created good opportunities to score. The Red Devils, of course, took the victory with penalties.
Manchester United won 5-3 in the penalty phase at the FedEx Field in Washington DC. As reported, Dutch coach Van Gaal had Man U players practice penalty kicks daily during practice. The work out under new coach proved to be successful against Internazionale on Tuesday late afternoon.
Man U is on track to take the Group A title of the International Champions Cup. As long as Man U defeats or ties Spaniard giants Real Madrid on Saturday, the English club team takes the cake in their group.
As for Inter, the Italian club team needs to defeat Serie A rivals AS Roma on Saturday. In the meantime, Inter Milan would need for Spaniard team Real Madrid to defeat Man U in regular time.
Internazionale has not played Argentine striker Rodrigo Palacio, who is probably their best striker. Palacio played in the World Cup this summer is most likely taking a rest. As for Manchester United, Dutch striker Robin van Persie is also missing from the International Champions Cup. Van Persie is actually resting for the striker had also participated in the World Cup earlier this summer.
