Management of LARPs (live action role playing games) involves keeping players engaged and involved in game story and content. However, many games encounter lengthy preparation times with limited help. Providing games is an excellent way to encourage players to sail through what would otherwise be considered 'down time.'
Consider setting out the rules for the following types of games:
Card Games
Card games are portable and many of them are simple and quick. Players can also bet in-game currency or objects of value when playing these games with each other. Card games work in almost all LARP settings, including medieval fantasy. They're particularly appropriate for steampunk or western games.
Board Games
Most people know how to play games such as chess or checkers. Check out stores like Five Below for affordable indoor and outdoor games. Some players prefer games like chess because such games can be carefully placed aside for later play when action or drama arises.
Trust Games
Consider running some trust games. When done in character, this can inspire some gameworthy tension and conflict. Be sure to consider costumes (dresses, weapons, hanging fabric) when designing these games. Note: Some trust games involve physical contact; a moderator is recommended for these activities.
Practice Games
Most heroes are experienced shieldmaidens, swordsmen, spellcasters or more. Every character appreciates the opportunity to learn his or her craft, especially if it results in experience. Allow players to challenge each other by providing targets for ranged spell packet attack. Provide one marshal and permit a non-lethal fighter practice.
