A man is wanted for sexually assaulting and robbing another man whom he grabbed by the crotch and tackled to the ground on a street in Athens early Thursday morning.

The incident happened around 2:20 a.m. on Pope Street near the Broad Street intersection, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

The 25-year-old told police he was walking south on Pope Street when he heard what sounded like someone running and turned to see a man running towards him, police spokeswoman Ms. Hilda Sorrow said in a news release.

“The suspect grabbed the victim’s crotch and tackled him to the ground,” Ms. Sorrow said. “He then placed his hand down the front of the victim’s pants.”

The victim punched the suspect in the face and the suspect then punched him in the face and chest, she said.

The assailant then got up and fled north on Pope Street, Ms. Sorrow said. After he left, the victim realized his wallet with his paycheck and passport valued at $205 had been stolen, she said.

The man is wanted for sexual battery, aggravated assault and robbery, police said.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5 feet, 8 inches to 5 feet, 9 inches tall, and weighing around 200 pounds, Ms. Sorrow said. His head was clean shaven and he had no facial hair. He was wearing a dark hoodie, dark pants, and white shoes.
