A man visiting the United States for the first time has disappeared and was last seen early Monday in a residential area of Baldwin, Nassau County police said.

Forty-nine-year-old David Churchill Shand was on his first visit to the United States from Kingston, Jamaica, when he vanished around 5 a.m. Monday from Woodland Estates Drive in Baldwin. Police say he suffers from a cognitive disorder and needs medication.

According to police, Churchill Shand “likes to walk” and may be approaching people on the street to ask for cigarettes. Authorities said he speaks with a Jamaican accent.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound man, was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black hooded sweatshirt and black and white sneakers with aqua-blue-colored shoe laces.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nassau County Missing Person Squad detectives at 516-573-7347 or call 911.
