Man throws himself and 3-year-old son from N.Y. skyscraper during custody battle

Once described as a doting dad and one who loved his family, 35-year-old Dmitriy Kanarikov of Brooklyn, N.Y. threw himself and his 3-year-old son Kirill from a 52-story Manhattan rooftop on Dec. 22 after his marriage broke down, which put the doting dad square in the middle of a bitter custody battle.

Kanarikov had visitation rights during the custody battle, and was supposed to return 3-year-old Kirill back over to the boy’s mom, Svetlana Bukharina, on Sunday, according to FOX News.

Instead, the distraught father, along with his baby boy, were found “on the lower rooftops of two separate nearby buildings” in Manhattan’s Upper West Side yesterday, not far from Columbus Circle and Lincoln Center, around noon.

The father was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initially, the baby managed to survive being thrown from the skyscraper, but not for long.

Luis Ortiz was at the hospital when paramedics were rushing young Kirill Kanarikov in, feverishly “pumping his chest and working on him.”

Ortiz said:

"You could tell he was slipping away. They said the father was up there, but they didn't bring anyone else in. It was just heartbreaking. I have two kids of my own. They tried to do the best they could."

Tragically, young Kirill Kanarikov was pronounced dead at the nearby hospital a short time later.
