The Canadian hotel is known for a strange drinking tradition that dates back to the 1970s. Back in the day, Captain Dick Stevenson, a river barge driver, started a tradition referred to as the “Sourtoe Cocktail Club.”
The tradition includes having a drink garnished with a mummified severed toe. The drink can then be sipped or chugged as long as the lips actually touch the toe. Customers willing to have a drink with the leathery toe receive a certificate and membership card.
More than 50,000 patrons have earned memberships and the event has a following. The Star reports the hotel gets 40-50 customers per night willing to kiss the mummy toe.
Unfortunately, the hotel will now have to find another toe since a customer recently swallowed the toe. In the past, the people have left their toes to the hotel in their will. Another donor had donated a toe that was lost in a lawnmower accident. The article says the hotel is currently trying to locate their next toe.
