The suspect is charged with armed robbery. His name is James Lee Jackson Jr.
WBTV reports that, according to police, a handgun was used by Jackson to rob the store just after 5 a.m.
Authorities were nearby and were in pursuit as Jackson tried to flee the scene.
Jackson led police on a chase for over four miles before coming to a stop.
Shots were fired by police as Jackson pulled a gun on them, but no one was hit. After the firing stopped, Jackson fled on foot to a townhouse and locked himself inside.
The property was surrounded by authorities from Rowan County as Jackson was inside. A couple of hours later, Jackson gave himself up and was taken into custody without incident.
According to China Grove Police Chief Eddie Kluttz, "He (Jackson) opened the door and was assisted to the ground. He had some minor cuts to the finger."
