Man surrenders after allegedly killing ex-girlfriend during drive-by

A man who allegedly shot and killed his former girlfriend in a drive-by turned himself in to police Saturday after family and friends urged him to surrender, police said.

Covington police charged Mr. Hannibal Wayne McMullen, 47, with murder in the death of Ms. Ketitra Techelle Jones, who had filed for a temporary order of protection against the man, officials said.

Mr. McMullen’s family members, friends and police had been communicating with McMullen via cell phone and text messaging since late yesterday afternoon requesting him to surrender after the shooting Friday morning, police spokesman Mr. Ken Malcom said.

The shooting happened shortly before 11 a.m. on Washington Street near Carroll Street, Mr. Malcom said.

Witnesses told police they heard and saw shots being fired from a blue Toyota Corolla into a silver Dodge Ram Truck as both vehicles were heading northeast towards the town square.

The Truck then crashed into an awning at the Pure Station on Washington Street, Mr. Malcom said.

Ms. Jones died as the result of a gunshot wound and Mr. McMullen was immediately identified as the suspect by detectives, Mr. Malcom said.

Investigators said Ms. Jones and Mr. McMullen had severed a relationship several months earlier. And Ms. Jones had sought an order of protection against McMullen, who owns a detail shop in Covington, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Ms. Annette Victor, an acquaintance of Ms. Jones, told the news station that she was “a very sweet girl. She didn’t bother nobody.

“Every time she’d see you, she’d have a smile on her face. She worked at Wal-Mart; she’d greet you with a smile.”

Mr. McMullen, who surrendered to police about 5 p.m., remained in the Newton County jail Sunday.
