Dedham, Essex - Most any expert will advise against rescuing dogs from icy bodies of water.
Those who are "in the know" will tell you that it is a risk not worth taking.
But when it comes to matters of the heart, some dog owners are willing to throw caution to the wind and gamble with their life if it means saving their 4-legged friend.
BBC News describes one man's heroic efforts to save his trapped dog from the icy confines of the River Stour on Sunday.
An eyewitness observed the man strip down to his underwear and crawl out onto the ice to retrieve his dog who was struggling in the river.
Though the man fell through at one point, he managed to get himself and his dog, back onto the ice and back to the safety of shore.
Those who observed the rescue effort were stunned.
Many will call the man's actions foolish - others heroic.
In this particular instance, the man's gamble paid off with the ultimate reward - the life of his dog.
