Man stabbed to death by rooster while attending a cockfight

Some might say that karma was at work when a 35-year-old man, who was attending a cockfight in Kern County, Calif., was killed by one of the fighting roosters.

According to Monday's KRMG News, Jose Luis Ochoa, who had prior cockfighting-related charges, died after being sliced in the leg by a razor which was attached to one of the roosters on Sunday.

John Goodwin, director of animal cruelty policy for the Humane Society of the United States, told the Bakersfield Californian:

It's pretty rare, but I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often considering the knives they put on those birds," he said. "It's not a surprise that somebody got killed."

Cockfighting is the avian version of the cruel, blood sport, dog-fighting. Like dog-fighting, lives are sacrificed for the sake of money.

Following the fight which left Ochoa with a fatal injury, five dead roosters were discovered.

According to KRMG News, cockfighting charges are only misdemeanors in California - in many other states, the charges are considered to be felonies.
