A 28-year-old man was shot to death in Columbia, and police on Wednesday said they have identified the man they believe killed him. Officials have also identified the victim. But the motive for the crime remained unknown.

Heyward S. Jackson, of 2233 Kenny Court, died from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body at 4:52 p.m. at Palmetto Health Richland, according to the Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said. His death came more than two hours after the shooting despite witnesses attempts to help him and police on Wednesday have identified the suspected shooter as 34-year-old Christopher Demetric Robinson.

Robinson is wanted for murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to Columbia police.

The shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on Ervin Street near Two Notch Road between Harrison Road and Benedict College’s football stadium, police said. Investigators said Robinson got into an argument with Jackson who was visiting someone in the 2300 block of Ervin Street. People who were at the scene flagged down an officer who was on routine patrol in the area, police spokeswoman Jeniffer Timmons said. When the officer arrived, he saw some witnesses rendering aid to the victim, Timmons said.

EMS was immediately requested while dispatchers sent additional police officers to the scene, she said. The victim was transported to a local hospital where medical staff pronounced him deceased.

Robinson allegedly shot the victim several times and left the scene towards Center Street with an unidentified woman, Timmons said. Officers set up a perimeter including a K9 track to search for the shooter, she said.

“This deadly shooting happened at a time when communities celebrated National Night Out,” Chief Skip Holbrook said. “This crime should serve as a reminder why violence won’t be tolerated. Residents provided information to Investigators because they want criminals to be held accountable for their actions.”

Investigators said they have not yet determined the motive for the shooting, but they do not believe it was random. The victim was acquainted with the shooter, Timmons said.

Anyone with information about this incident or the whereabouts of the suspect is asked to call (888) 274-6272.
