A 20-year-old man managed to get over a fence into the parking lot of a Sheraton Hotel after being shot multiple times on the complex of a housing facility for college students Thursday afternoon in Sandy Springs.
So far, police have not released the man's identity. And as of late Thursday night, they had no suspect and no witness to the shooting. Earlier in the day, they temporarily blocked off an area near Hammond Drive and Barfield Road to canvass the area for witnesses and evidence, according to a media report.
The shooting happened around 4 p.m. at the Hub, extended-stay apartments for students – many of whom attend the Art Institute of Atlanta and American Intercontinental University, police said.
Officers responded to the location after getting a call about a person shot, spokesman Capt. Steve Rose said. It was unclear if the caller was someone from the hotel or the Hub. When officers arrived they found the victim in the back of the hotel, the spokesman said.
Investigators said the man was shot at least twice in the Hub’s parking lot before he climbed over a fence and collapsed in the back parking lot of the hotel at 800 Hammond Drive. It’s unclear where on the body the man was struck, if he was shot at close range and what type of weapon was used.
So far, police have no motive for the shooting and it was unclear if the victim was staying at the Hub.
Witnesses told police they saw someone running from the scene, but it’s unclear if the person was a suspect or someone who saw what happened and got scared, Rose said. That person jumped the fence to get away and now police are searching for the man to question him.
