Sunday night, a man was shot and killed for an apparent carjacking at the Mall at Short Hills in New Jersey; his wife watched as he was shot and then later died in the mall parking lot. The couple had just returned to their Range Rover at 9:10 p.m. after Christmas shopping at the Short Hills Mall. The shooting occurred on the third deck of the parking lot near the Nordstrom store, according to NJ.com.
The husband opened the car door for his wife and then walked to the driver’s side door and was shot. The wife got out of the vehicle and two people drove off in the stolen car and headed east on Route 24. It is a 2012 silver Range Rover and the license plate number is U26BVD.
The victim was 30-years-old and lived in Hudson County. He was taken to Morristown Medical Center and pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m. The wife was not injured.
Authorities believe that the couple was targeted at the Short Hills Mall because of the car’s value.
The Short Hills Mall was open later than usual for extended holiday hours.
Millburn Mayor Sandra Haimoff said they were deeply concerned about the shooting:
"Our police department is out there and I’m sure they’re doing everything that needs to be done. But it is upsetting and it’s unfortunate that this happened.”
The Short Hills Mall has 160 stores and restaurants including: Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue. The Short Hills Mall is located near the Newark airport.
