A standoff between Yonkers police and a distraught man on Rugby Road earlier this morning ended after he shot himself in the face.
Detective Lt. Patrick McCormack said the man, barricaded inside the residence, surrendered peacefully around 10:30 am but was found by emergency service personel with a severe gunshot wound to the face. He was still conscious and taken to the hospital, where he is currently being treated.
The incident began around 8:15 this morning when police received a 911 call about a man with a gun on Rugby Road, McCormack said. Police arrived on the scene with armored police trucks and hostage negotiators.
Neighboring homes were secured and a nearby school--Westchester Hills School 29--was shut down as a precaution.
Police also found a handgun and two rifles inside the residence.
The man's name was not released, and at this point in time, police do not know why he shot himself. The incident remains under investigation.
