While firing at a target outside his home near Rogersville, Mo. in Christian County on Oct. 28, a 24-year-old man firing a .22-caliber rifle shot and killed a 4-year-old girl when she tragically stepped into his line of fire.
KRCG reported that the young girl was a house guest of the man that ultimately shot her in the head.
The shooter was arrested due to an outstanding warrant in a neighboring county. No charges have yet been brought against the man who still remains unidentified.
The Springfield News-Leader identified the 4-year-old shooting victim as Zoie Dougan of Branson, Mo., who died en route to the hospital following the shooting.
Christian County Sheriff Joey Kyle said:
“The position he was shooting from — his vision was blocked to his right, and a visiting 4-year-old girl walked into the path of fire and he shot her in the head.”
“We investigate them as a crime until we can determine otherwise,” Kyle said.
“We’ll present our findings to the prosecutor and she’ll make a decision as to whether or not there will be charges filed.”
