Man’s remains found among Long Island serial killer’s other victims
Long Island, NY - On Tuesday, police announced a skeleton found among remains thought to be victims of the Long Island serial killer belongs to a man.
The man’s body was found near those of a woman and a child -- the youngster’s remains wrapped in a blanket. Authorities estimate the child was less than five years old when it died.
Although the man's and child's remains were found among bones thought to be victims of the Long Island serial killer, they have not been definitively linked to those crimes.
This is because so far, the elusive murderer was thought to have solely targeted adult female prostitutes. This was deduced after four of the ten sets of remains were identified as women who advertised sexual services on Craigslist.
The latest findings have investigators examining two different scenarios -- the Long Island serial killer has not just set his sights on female sex workers and has branched out to kill others, or the bodies that don’t fit the killer’s profile of a victim are not related to the Long Island serial killer case and were dumped by another murderer.
Retired New York Police Department Homicide Lt. Vernon Geberth told the New York Daily News that he believes the killings may be linked, as he feels two killers dumping bodies in the same location is unlikely.
“Maybe, just maybe, the prostitute brought along her husband, boyfriend, etc., for protection,” he said.
“Now this guy shows up, and there’s a baby in the other room, and he decides: ‘I don’t like this. I gotta take them out.’”
