The masked man who attempted to rob a pizza restaurant made up the pizza sob story that earned him a free pizza from the employee who felt sorry for him. According to police, on Jan. 22 David Randall Lacey, 33, walked into a Papa John's restaurant with a bandanna covering his face and demanded money.
However, the would-be robber had a change of heart and invented a fake sob story when he realized how little money was in the cash register — just $24.56, according to a police report.
The Washington Post stated on Feb. 1 that the man's attempt to rob the store was because he needed the money to support his family. It was later found out that the man doesn't have a wife and child as he claimed, and he just made up the sob story as a way to gain sympathy from the clerk. A police affidavit states,
“David said that when the register was placed on the counter, he realized there was hardly any money. At that point, David told the clerk the story about needing money for his wife and kids. David does not have any children in Helena and told me he was referring to his friends’ kids, who consider him an uncle.”
On Thursday, Lacey was arrested and is now facing felony charges of attempted robbery.
