I think repurposing is one of the best forms of flattery. When it comes to a men’s dress shirt, there are so many options, it’s crazy! I stumbled upon this peplum dress made from a shirt…no pattern but she made one that fit her from an existing dress! That’s a terrific idea! Trash to Couture (appropriate name!) explains her process and she has great photos!
Another cute peplum idea is taking an XL men’s button down shirt and create that cute back gathered peplum to not only draw in the waist, but you have a cute accent to the shirt! Although, all I could find was a photo crediting Zoe Edward’s, I think the box pleats are pretty easy to pin in place and you could try either stitching them in place or actually cutting off the back and replacing it back on with a strip across the back.
Laura also found a way to recreate a romper from a men’s shirt and the DIY on her Trash to Couture blog. It is so cute that she used a low-key, paisley print shirt for the project! A lot of her tutorials require you to take your existing clothes and use them as patterns, which is really smart…you know how they fit!
Lastly, I have to share Sharon’s Pinterest board of over 100 ways to repurpose those shirts, it’s brilliant! I especially love the 2 shirt dress pin, the peasant blouse and shirt collar “haute couture” gown!
