'Man looks at appearances, but God looks at the heart'

Imagine graduating from the wrong school, a conservative school in a progressive milieu. Imagine being one hell of a strong guy in the gym, yet being deemed weak due to committing the sin of being 5'6", in a 6'2" world. Imagine being the wrong color, in a world which has decided which color deserves respect. Imagine being born to a tribe deemed expendable. Imagine worshipping God in a land which seeks to wipe out your faith.

Imagine a God who sees past all of this and goes right to the heart of the matter.

"But the LORD said to Samuel: 'Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature, because I have rejected him. Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the LORD looks into the heart.'” 1 Samuel 16:1, 6-7, 10-13

This world is full of crap.

Graduate from the wrong school, as I did, and see how hard it is to serve the Church. Blow away every big burly fat guy, out lifting their overrated asses in the gym, and see how you are downsized because of the all important American-male height factor. Be a white man in an America hell bent on revenge--where black, hispanic, female, and gay are the new world order--and see how if feels (funny, but white men in America are the only ones who know what the 'n' word means nowadays). Be a member of certain religious groups (Catholics/Evangelicals), or certain political/philosophical groups (Republican/Pro-Life/NRA/Tea Party/Conservative), and feel the hate that surrounds you like boiling water ready to hard boil your heart.

Be an unborn baby in mommies womb.

"You spread the table before me in the sight of my foes; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows." Psalm 23:1-6

But a funny thing happened while walking through a dark valley...

Some of us meet God through our misfortunes and sufferings. Some of us 'little' people, some of us misfits, meet God through the treatment we receive at the hands of the big, beautiful, holy, and perfect people. Through our suffering we find out that God is completely different from the outward-looking world, seeking our Love--through His Love--from within.

“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.” Ephesians 5:8-14

Let's face it. Some of us, through stereotypes and prejudices, are dead on sight. Walk into any group meeting, secular or religious, and the first thing people do is size you up, or down. Life, therefore, in this world is truly an uphill battle.

But God alone gives us life!

Through Jesus, David's conquer beer-bloated Goliath's every day! Through the grace of God, saints are created in the Love of God, Love which moves mountains. Through the Cross of Christ, wounded heroes overcome worldly b.s. and live life fully as dignified human persons.

Praise be to God!

"Then Jesus said, 'I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do see might become blind.” John 9:1-41

The Truth is that God gives us exactly what we want.

If we seek Mercy we receive Mercy, and become Mercy. In so becoming, we see the good in people because we give them a chance to shine. If we seek to Judge, we receive Judgment, and we remain blind to so many hidden gems in our fellow sibling. In effect, we are chained to our own judgments.

Today, we must ask ourselves what we truly want.
