The tragic incident took place on Saturday evening at the home of Diane and Tom Vick.
According to multiple sources, the family dogs, a boxer and a cocker spaniel, were fighting when the couple attempted to break them apart. Tom Vick, 64, sustained injuries which proved fatal in the attack; he died on Sunday morning.
His wife, Diane, who is reported to be the former mayor of Bullhead City, was also badly injured and had to be hospitalized.
According to AZ Central, Tom Vick was a social studies teacher at the Mohave High School.
The dogs involved in the fight and subsequent attack were taken to the Bullhead City Animal Control facility.
According to the ASPCA, dog owners should never grab the collar of a dog who is engaged in a fight with another dog as it will likely lead to a dog bite; instead, a barrier or the spray of water from a hose is preferred to help distract the dogs from the altercation.
If the dogs must be physically separated, and the barriers and/or water are not effective, the ASPCA recommends that the rear legs be pulled while spinning the dog (like a wheelbarrow) away from the other dog.
