Edgewood, New Mexico- A man has been arrested and charged after violently killing his girlfriend's dog with a screwdriver and then marinating it with plans to consume the remains. The Chicago Tribune reported on Thursday July 31, 2014 that Salvador Martinez, 46, was arrested for suspected extreme animal cruelty for this gruesome situation. Additional charges may apply since several young grandchildren were present in the home at the time the cruelty was inflicted.

Although difficult to believe, it's actually legal to eat dogs in 44 of our United States. Eating dogs seems primitive and barbaric to most Americans, but strangely the majority of our country allows it despite their companion role in our society. However, because of the horror inflicted on this puppy, since he was stabbed with a screwdriver, and that led to it's untimely death, this would be classified as an animal cruelty case in nearly any jurisdiction. Torrance County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Donna Zamora stated, "I would say this tops the list of the worst cases of animal cruelty we have ever seen."

The 9 month old puppy named Onyx was a Chiweenie (mix between a Chihuahua and Dachshund.) He was stabbed in the heart in the family's backyard and then skinned while Martinez's young grandchildren were in the home and fully aware that the murder of their beloved family pet was taking place.

KRQE of New Mexico, reported, "According to federal court documents, Martinez was arrested in late 2003 after he was caught driving across the border with nearly 13 kilos of cocaine. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for that crime after pleading guilty and his most recent charges would appear to represent a probation violation."
