Man infects teen with HIV: Man gets 95 years, now infects jail inmates with HIV

The man who infected a teen with HIV when he raped the 15-year-old girl has been sentenced to 95 years in prison. Now, the 31-year-old man continues to infect jail inmates with HIV. According to a Dallas Morning News update on June 18, a 40-year-old Dallas County Jail inmate told the judge on Wednesday that he had consensual sex with the 31-year-old man while in jail but that he had no idea that he was HIV-positive.

The 40-year-old Dallas County Jail inmate is married to a woman and has not told her about his little jail-house affair that might have left him with HIV. The unidentified man is in the Dallas County Jail for two felony theft charges that are still pending. His crime? He stole some clothes.

Reportedly, Matthew Louis Reese, who is in jail for having raped a 15-year-old girl, didn’t share his HIV-positive status with the married man. It was only after other inmates told him that Reese was positive that he found out. “I don’t believe it’s right what he did,” the man told the judge. “He should have told me he was HIV-positive.”

The news that Reese is continuing to spread his HIV in jail came to light during this week’s court hearings. Reese has children with two other women and the number of inmates that he has had a relationship with is unknown.

On Tuesday, the teen who had been raped and infected by Reese testified that she had met the man during a chat call in December of 2012. Their first intimate encounter took place in a car at the Garland movie theater in 2013 and even though Reese was already aware of his HIV-positive status, he did not tell the then 15-year-old virgin about it -- nor did he use a condom.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Reese pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child with a deadly weapon, aggravated sexual assault with serious bodily injury and sexual assault of a child. Each charge could have meant 55, 20, and 20 years in jail for each.

Because Reese admitted to his crime, his defense attorney Allan Fishburn asked the judge that his client should be allowed to serve the three sentences concurrently. “Yes, he committed statutory rape, he had AIDS or was at least HIV-positive, and he didn’t tell her – that’s why we got 55 years,” said Fishburn on Wednesday.

On Thursday morning, however, Judge Pat McDowell added the other 20 years and sentenced Reese to the total of 95 years, reported KWTX. “The sentences will be served consecutively, as prosecutors wanted.”

The man who infected a teen with HIV is not eligible for parole until he is 81 years old since the prosecutor argued that he “would be a danger to the community if there is even a slight possibility of his release.” In his closing argument, prosecutor Soni Lewis added that “the only person he cares about is himself and because of that this defendant needs to go away for as long as the law allows, not because of the type of person he is, but because the community needs to be protected from Matthew Louis Reese.” Should anyone protect the other inmates though?
