Man infects teen with HIV: Judge sentences man to 95 years in prison

A man knowingly infected a teen with HIV, and he will now have a lot of time behind bars to think about his actions. Matthew Louis Reese was in a seven month long relationship with the teen, and he infected her with HIV. This was not a mistake. The man knew he had the disease at the time. The Dallas Morning News reported on this man's crime and his sentence on June 18.

Matthew Louis Reese was sentenced on Wednesday, and he will spend 95 years in prison for his crime. He was charged with three different crimes. Because of the girl's age, he was charged with sexual assault of a child. He was also charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child with a deadly weapon and aggravated sexual assault with serious bodily injury. He met the teenager in December 2012.

The teen revealed that she met Reese through a chat line, and they had sex for the first time in 2013. She was a virgin when they met, and she testified that they never used condoms when they were intimate with each other. The girl is now 17 years old, and her name was not revealed in the news report. However, she is now HIV positive. According to Huffington Post, the man told the girl he had symptoms when she was in the hospital, but he assured her that he was not infected.

This teen is not the first Reese slept with. Another woman testified in court that she slept with Reese when she was still a teenager, and she has a child by him. Reese was never charged in that case. Another woman also testified at the trial, and she also has a child by him. It was revealed in court that Reese found out he was HIV positive back in 2006, but he never revealed that to the teenager.

A fellow inmate he slept with in jail also did not know the man was HIV positive at the time of their encounter last year. The man found out from someone else at the jail. The man testified in court that he would not have slept with Reese if he had known about his HIV status. That man is serving time for two felony theft charges for stealing clothes.

After two days of testimony, the judge in this case sentenced Reese to 75 years in prison, and he added on 25 more years on Thursday. The 75 year sentence is for two of the three charges. He received 55 years for the charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child with a deadly weapon. For the remaining two charges, he received sentences of 20 years each. The judge had the option to add 20 more years to his time behind bars, or he could allow the man to serve that time concurrently. He decided to add on the years.

It is clear that the man will not see a life outside of jail ever again though. Reese will not be eligible for parole until he is 81 years old. Soni Lewis, the prosecutor on the case, stated that Reese is a danger to the community. Lewis said the following at the trial: "The only person he cares about is himself, and because of that, this defendant needs to go away for as long as the law allows, not because of the type of person he is, but because the community needs to be protected from Matthew Louis Reese."

Reese has been sentenced to a total of 95 years in prison. Is that enough for what he did? He not only infected this one girl, but he also slept with others since his diagnosis. A man in jail for stealing clothes may now be facing his own death sentence because of Reese. This man does need to be stopped, but he was stopped too late for this teen and the others he infected since 2006.
