Shoppers at a Sarasota, Florida mall got a scare on Tuesday when an unnamed man decided to go on a sprinkling spree with the ashes of his deceased fiancée, reports Channel 6 South Florida NEWS on October 17. When the man threw a white substance into the LensCrafters store at the Westfield Southgate Mall, and ran away, no one knew what the substance was.
As it turns out the grieving man was simply spreading the ashes of his beloved fiancée in locations that were important to the couple. Although details are not given, the woman apparently had connections to the LensCrafters store.
Police and hazmat crews promptly shut down the mall for 2 hours until they could determine if the substance was hazardous. Shoppers in the mall were not allowed to leave and asked to shelter in place until workers determined the area was safe.
No charges have been filed against the grieving man, but the police say that the Sarasota Fire Department and Westfield Southgate Mall could seek to recover civil costs from the unidentified man.
