Man gets probation for dog abandonment

Remember the man who abandoned his injured dog last August? It seems that although pleading guilty to animal cruelty, the judge gave him one year of unsupervised probation.

KUSA-TV in Denver first reported on this on Jan. 16, and as an additional punishment, Anthony Ortolani must also perform 30 hours of community service.

Anthony claims that last August, he and a friend were hiking on Mount Bierstadt in Colorado. Suddenly bad weather occurred and when he couldn't carry his German Shepherd mixed breed dog, Missy, he abandoned her so that he and his friend could get down off the mountain safely.

A hiker later noticed Missy, and he and some volunteers rescued her. Missy is with a new owner.

This story was also highlighted on Yahoo news on Jan. 16.
