A man raped and prostituted a 15-year-old girl who was found imprisoned in the attic of his southwest Atlanta home.
And on Monday, a Fulton County judge sentenced him to life in prison. Officials said Mr. Dwayne Shaw’s arrest and conviction is part of a larger crack down on those guilty of human trafficking and child exploitation.
The 34-year-old man was convicted of human trafficking, pimping, pandering, aggravated sodomy, aggravated child molestation, statutory rape and false imprisonment, according to the district attorney’s office.
He was also convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
Investigators said Mr. Shaw met the teen online and after meeting her in person in November 2012, he lured her into prostitution.
“He began to schedule “dates” for her at local hotels and pocketed all of the money she earned.,” spokeswoman Ms. Yvette Brown said. “The victim was forced to stay at the defendant’s Oak Street home in Southwest Atlanta where he raped and imprisoned her.
“She was discovered after four days following a series of text messages she sent to family and friends alerting them she was being held against her will.”
Atlanta officers were able to track the messages to Mr. Shaw’s home where the victim was discovered barricaded in the attic.
