A man beat his cousin to death with a hammer at a discount College Park mall over claims that the relative was having an affair with his wife.
Mr. Hagie Cham admitted that he murdered his cousin and was sentenced to life in prison, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.
Mr. Cham, 47, pleaded guilty to murder, felony murder and aggravated assault in the death of Mr. Mohamadou Touray, the district attorney’s spokeswoman Ms. Yvette Brown said.
The incident happened on Aug. 7, 2010 inside the Old National Discount Mall at 2660 Godby Road.
“Several witnesses reported seeing the defendant strike the victim at least three times in his head and chest with a hammer,” Ms. Brown said. “The defendant even proclaimed to police who arrived on scene that he had killed the victim.”
He was arrested at the scene and the victim was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, but died the following day from his injuries, prosecutors said.
“During a subsequent interrogation, Cham told detectives investigating the murder that he was upset because of the victim’s alleged affair with his wife,” Ms. Brown said.
Mr. Cham was scheduled to stand trial, but opted instead to enter a guilty plea shortly after jury selection and was immediately sentenced to life in prison.
